Linux HPC Cluster at TU Dortmund University - LiDO3

High Performance Computing (HPC) is indispensable for scientific computing, which requires high computing power and storage capacities. The ITMC operates the high performance computers with the associated resources and accesses for the TU Dortmund and the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences.

The Linux HPC cluster at TU Dortmund University (LiDO3) is available as a tool for scientific computing to scientists at the TU Dortmund University, the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts and, within the framework of collaborations, to UA Ruhr members.

The ITMC offers a special infrastructure for this purpose:

  • a compute cluster system based on the "distributed memory computing" architecture,
many high-performance computing nodes (CPU number and speed as well as main memory),
  • a low-latency communication network,
  • a parallel high-performance file system,
  • scientific and engineering software (especially for FEM methods) for both serial and parallel applications. In some cases, this is additionally applied for within the framework of a state licence and can thus be made available for state-wide use if necessary.

LiDO3 also serves to prepare projects and programs for the use of supercomputers.

LiDO3 is also the central HPC resource of the Dortmund Centre for Scientific Computing (DoWiR).

The Dortmund Centre for Scientific Computing - DoWiR for short - bundles existing competences and resources in the field of scientific computing and "High Performance Computing" (HPC) at TU Dortmund University in terms of expertise and personnel in order to optimise the efficiency of the development and application of computer-based methods.

TU Dortmund University is part of the North Rhine-Westphalian Competence Network for High Performance Computing (HPC.NRW).

It offers a competent and thematically broad-based contact and advice centre for HPC users in NRW.
Within the framework of the competence network HPC.NRW, a network of thematic clusters is being created for low-threshold training, advisory and coaching services. The aim is to use high performance computing and storage facilities effectively and efficiently and also to support newly graduated and doctoral scientists.

Location & approach

The easiest way to reach the main building of the ITMC is via the freeway A45 from the exit "Dortmund-Eichlinghofen". Turn right there onto Universitätsstraße. At the next set of traffic lights, continue straight ahead and turn left at the next junction onto Hauert Straße. At the first traffic light turn right onto Otto-Hahn-Straße. After about 300 m you will reach the ITMC building (on the left side of the street). The parking spaces on the parking lanes along the street are mostly occupied. A smaller - mostly also occupied - parking lot is located on Joseph-von-Fraunhofer-Straße (entrance 36). A larger parking lot is located about 250 m further on Otto-Hahn-Straße (entrance 30).

From Dortmund main station, take S-Bahn line 1 in the direction of Bochum/Essen to the Dortmund Universität stop (journey time approx. 7 minutes).
From Bochum Hauptbahnhof, take S-Bahn line 1 in the direction of Dortmund to the Dortmund Universität stop (journey time approx. 15 minutes).

You can reach the building on foot in about 15 minutes from the S-Bahn station. Walk up the wide staircase of the S-Bahn station. Turn left along the university library, cross the Mensa bridge and continue straight ahead. At Martin-Schmeißer-Platz turn left until you reach Otto-Hahn-Straße. There, keep to the right and continue along Otto-Hahn-Straße until you reach house number 12.

The easiest way to reach this branch is via the A45 freeway from the "Dortmund-Eichlinghofen" exit. Turn right there onto Universitätsstraße. At the next set of traffic lights, continue straight ahead and turn left at the next junction onto Hauert Straße. At the second set of traffic lights, turn right onto Emil-Figge-Straße. Continue on this street until you reach the next crossing with traffic lights. There you will find the parking spaces closest to the building. You will reach the smaller one (entrance 21) if you turn right into Vogelpothsweg. If you want to use the large parking lot (entrance 18), continue straight ahead on Emil-Figge-Straße.

You can reach the building on foot in about 1 minute from the S-Bahn station. Walk up the wide staircase of the S-Bahn station. Just in front of you is the large building Emil-Figge-Straße 50. Use the footpath that leads straight towards it in the direction of the stairs.

The facilities of TU Dortmund University are spread over two campuses, the larger Campus North and the smaller Campus South. Additionally, some areas of the university are located in the adjacent “Technologiepark”.
