Stop using Sophos Antivirus Client for business and personal use!

Exclamation mark on black sign © Karolin Kriesch/TU Dortmund

The ITMC would like to point out once again that the contract with Sophos for business and private use of the antivirus client for TU employees and students expired on 01.10.2024. Please do not continue to use the product as it will no longer be updated!

A successor, Cisco Endpoint Security, is available for work computers and has already been rolled out in the areas managed by the ITMC. Unfortunately, the Cisco client cannot be used privately by students and employees.

If Sophos is still in use somewhere in your department, please contact your IT representative or the Service Desk.

Please uninstall the Sophos antivirus software manually on private devices. If you are using Windows, the free Windows Defender from Microsoft, which we recommend for use on private Windows devices, will then be automatically reactivated. If you use MacOS, you can either rely on the tools integrated in MacOS (Gatekeeper, Malware Removal TOOL, XProtect), which do not offer their own graphical interface. We therefore recommend installing an additional virus protection program on MacOS. You can find commercial providers at: https://www.av-comparatives.org. A free open source alternative for experienced users is ClamAV for MacOS. For Linux, we recommend the open source virus scanner ClamAV included in the distributions.
