On 17 March 2026,TU Dortmund University, together with Minister for Culture and Science Ina Brandes, launched the fourth generation of LiDO HPC cluster. To set it up, the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) have allocated funds of €4.5 million. The subsequent scientific colloquium provided a forum for professional exchange on innovative applications and research prospects in scientific computing.

In her opening remarks, Ina Brandes, Minister of Culture and Science for the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, emphasized the central role of high-performance computing infrastructures in the further development of AI and other future technologies.
With LiDO4, TU Dortmund University is strengthening not only its own research landscape but also North Rhine-Westphalia as a center of science and research as a whole. The scientific colloquium highlighted the close interconnection between technological infrastructure and substantive research. 

Focus on high-performance computing and artificial intelligence
This year’s presentations focused on the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) in the context of modern high-performance computers. With its architecture, LiDO4 prioritizes areas that are specifically optimized for data-intensive applications and AI-supported processes.
The presentations highlighted, among other things:

  • current research projects in the STEM disciplines,
  • methodological developments in the field of simulation and data analysis,
  • as well as the growing importance of powerful computing infrastructures for AI applications.
